What documents does a buyer need to diligence a carbon credit project?

A buyer diligencing a carbon credit project needs the registry listing and methodology, the project description, the VVB validation and verification reports, monitoring reports, issuance serials and vintage, then carbon rights, land tenure and FPIC. For AFOLU, the non-permanence file sits with those. The buyer’s own request list controls.

Re-check the registry; PDFs in a room are copies. Have counsel review the cut. Native KMZ, shapefile, DWG and engineering files stay out of the room; the developer shares PDF exports.

Carbon-credit buyer document index (definition). The numbered evidence file behind one credit offtake or project-company sale.

It prices the registry listing, the project description, VVB reports and issuance serials first, then carbon rights and FPIC.

A generic company-sale checklist is not this index.

The index, sourced, not a vendor list

Verra’s project description and monitoring report page (retrieved 2026-10-13) says the project description covers location, start date, crediting period and ownership of the emission reductions, plus additionality, the baseline and the monitoring parameters, and that an approved validation/verification body (VVB) must validate it. The same page says the monitoring report records implementation status, monitored data and the reductions for that period, then a VVB verifies them. Verra’s Registration and Issuance Process v5.0 (16 December 2025, retrieved 2026-10-13) lists, for registration without verification review, the project description, the validation report, the non-permanence risk report where relevant, and the calculation spreadsheets. Gold Standard’s public-disclosure rule clarification (20 May 2025, retrieved 2026-10-13) requires the PDD, monitoring reports, validation and verification reports, the stakeholder consultation report and the safeguarding assessment to sit on the Impact Registry. ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles (retrieved 2026-10-13) add tracking, transparency, independent validation and verification, additionality, permanence, no double-counting, and safeguards. None of them publishes a file count. The solar-and-storage version of this index is what documents a buyer needs for a solar or battery storage project acquisition. The company-sale version is what should be in a sell-side data room index. How a developer stages a process is how to run a sale process for a renewable energy project at NTP.

First-look, after exclusivity, keep out

First-look is what an NDA’d buyer sees with the registry listing, the project description, the VVB reports and the issuance facts. After exclusivity is confirmatory sampling of title, FPIC and the buffer file. Keep-out is what does not belong in the open tree. Methodology approval is not a project guarantee. A third-party rating is not a substitute for the registry file. UNIDROIT is still drafting principles on the legal nature of verified carbon credits (retrieved 2026-10-13); title sits with counsel. VCMI’s Claims Code of Practice (retrieved 2026-10-13) is how a company communicates use of credits, not the project file. Have counsel review. This page is not a template.

Norton Rose Fulbright’s FPIC note (retrieved 2026-10-13) records the Kenya Environment and Land Court judgment of 24 January 2025 stopping conservancy and carbon-offset operations where consultation was not prior, plus Colombia’s Constitutional Court in June 2024 and a Brazilian Federal Court suspension in May 2025. Verra’s AFOLU Non-Permanence Risk Tool v4.2 (3 May 2024, retrieved 2026-10-13) requires the VVB to evaluate the risk rating; projects that fail the analysis are not eligible for crediting until the risk is addressed. FAQ

Who decides the final document list?

The buyer's own diligence request list.

Verra, Gold Standard and ICVCM publish the public file, not a file count.

Have counsel review the cut. This page is not a template.

Do I still need to check the registry if the PDFs are in the room?

Yes. ICVCM's transparency principle requires the programme to keep project documents public.

Serials, vintage and retirement status live on the registry.

A copy in a room can lag a transfer or a recall. Re-check at the source.

Do KMZ, shapefile or DWG drawings go in the room?

They cannot be uploaded.

The developer shares PDF exports of project-boundary maps, site plans and monitoring plots, and keeps native files in their own GIS or engineering share.

When does a host-country letter of authorization belong in the file?

When the buyer will make a Paris-aligned or corresponding-adjustment claim.

Article 6.2 cooperative approaches sit with counsel and the host country.

A voluntary offtake that will not claim an adjustment can leave the LoA out. Have counsel review.

How does this index differ from a solar or battery-storage acquisition?

The registry file, VVB reports and issuance serials sit here first.

Carbon rights and FPIC replace interconnection and offtake as the land and consent questions.

The battery file is extra on the solar-and-storage page.

If the files are already in a folder, grade which row they are on. Cashpian is a gated room for that packet. It is not a listing portal. It does not sell the company or run the deal.
