Best data room for a seed round in 2026 (6 we priced)

For a seed round in 2026, skip a dedicated virtual data room until a serious fund asks. A view-only Google Drive folder is $0. DocSend Standard is $45/user/month for the deck (retrieved 2026-10-14). The runner-up is a published-price room once the packet is about 20 files, not one slide deck.

This is our list of 6. We did not pad it. Vendors that rank themselves first are not this page. Each row is a seed job, plus that tool’s ceiling at seed volume.

Best data room for a seed round (definition). The cheapest tool that matches the files a seed investor actually opens: deck, cap table, model, formation, existing SAFEs.

Drive wins friends-and-family. DocSend wins the deck. A dedicated room wins the ~20-file packet. Quote-only VDRs win banker-led M&A, not a $2–4M seed.

How we tested

We re-fetched each vendor’s own pricing or cost page on 2026-10-01. Self-serve tools have a public number. Quote-only tools stay quote-only. We did not score vendors against ourselves. We did not invent a price.

Sources are outbound below. If a vendor moved a figure after this date, believe their page. The category list for startups of any stage is best data rooms for startups. This page is seed volume only.

What seed investors actually open

Seed diligence is not a 70-file Series A room. Operators who write checks still start with the current deck, a fully diluted cap table that matches the legal docs, a model with burn and use of funds, formation, existing SAFEs, founder vesting, and a product demo if there is one. Customer contracts only if there are customers.

That set is usually 15 to 30 current files. A 5-file first share (deck, model, cap table, CVs, demo) is a warm intro, not a packet. Two hundred files is a banker process. Keep the unpublished sequences and the full customer list out of the first share; that list is what to leave out of a seed data room. If you are in a batch, the packet is shaped by the program’s published deal. See What should be in an accelerator data room?.

Drive still wins the $0 row at seed

A view-only Google Drive folder is the honest free answer (retrieved 2026-10-14). Early angels care that the cap table matches the legal docs, not that the folder is branded. Use Drive until more than a handful of people need the packet.

DocSend wins the deck, not the packet

DocSend Standard is $45/user/month for deck tracking and unlimited visitors. Advanced Data Rooms is $180/month for 3 users. Figures from DocSend pricing, retrieved 2026-10-14. Stay on Standard while the job is one file. The split is DocSend or a data room for a seed founder.

Papermark and Digify at seed volume

Papermark Free is €0 with 50 documents on papermark.com/pricing (pricing.md, retrieved 2026-10-14). That 50-document cap is a seed-sized room. Data Rooms is €99/month billed yearly (€149/month month-to-month). It is not a banker VDR.

Digify publishes Pro from $140/month on its virtual data room page and pricing (retrieved 2026-10-14). The job it wins is persistent protection after a download. Most seed packets do not need that.

A company room vs a banker VDR at seed

A company-priced room is one line item for the ~20-file packet, not per seat and not per page. Cashpian Standard is $100 / mo per company, or $1,000 / yr. See pricing and What is Cashpian?. Seed dollars are on how much a data room costs for a seed round.

FirmRoom publishes $395/month for 2 GB and overage at $150/GB/month on firmroom.com/pricing (retrieved 2026-10-14). That is a traditional VDR with a public number. Datasite does not. Datasite’s cost FAQ is quote-only: How much does a data room cost? (retrieved 2026-10-14). Do not rent it for a seed packet.

FAQ

How many files does a seed packet actually need?

Usually 15 to 30 current files, not 200.

Deck, cap table, model, formation, SAFEs, IP assignment, founder vesting, use of funds.

A 5-file room is a first share, not diligence.

What do seed investors open first?

The current deck, then the cap table, then the model.

Formation and existing SAFEs next if they are writing a check.

They do not start with the full customer list or unpublished IP.

Is a view-only Drive folder enough for an institutional seed?

For friends-and-family, yes.

Once a serious fund asks for the packet, Drive has no watermark and no per-viewer log.

That is when a published-price room earns the line.

Should we rent a banker VDR for a $3M raise?

No, unless the lead mandates it or a banker is running a sale.

Datasite does not publish a seed price on its own site.

That cell is quote-only.

What should stay out of the first share?

Full customer lists, unpublished sequences, privileged legal, and stale decks.

Do not hide material facts from signed NDA diligence.

The leave-out list is a separate page.

If the files are already in a folder, grade which row they are on. Cashpian is a gated room for that packet. It is not a listing portal. It does not sell the company or run the deal.

The packet, not the list

Open a room when the packet is about 20 files.
