Does a first-time fund manager need a data room or an investor portal like Carta or Juniper Square?
A first-time fund manager needs a data room during the raise and an investor portal at first close.
Carta, Juniper Square, and AngelList win subscriptions, KYC, capital calls, distributions, K-1s, and LP reporting.
If AngelList or Carta already administers the fund, the fundraising room is included. AngelList’s is free.
Data room vs investor portal (definition). The room is the raise: NDA, PPM, track record, DDQ. The portal is the fund after first close: subscriptions, capital calls, K-1s.
They are sequential, not substitutes.
Buying a portal to share a PPM is the wrong spend. Staying on Drive through LP diligence is how the track record leaks.
The raise, then the portal
Stay on a tracked file while the job is the deck. DocSend wins that row. Open a room when the PPM, the track record, and more than one LP leave that one file. What belongs in the folder is what should be in a Fund I data room for LP due diligence.
Open the LP portal at first close, with the fund administrator. Carta’s LP Portalis a single login across GPs on Carta: statements of interest, cash notices, fund performance, documents, PCAP, a transaction ledger, and wire instructions. Juniper Square’s investor portal is the same post-close job. AngelList runs subscriptions next to its room. Cashpian is not an LP portal. It does not take subscriptions, run KYC, call capital, issue K-1s, or report to LPs.
Which tool for which job
Each row has a winner. A table that pretends otherwise is not useful.
| Job | Who wins | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send the deck and see who opened which page | DocSend | A tracked file. Overkill to open a room for one deck. |
| One trusted LP, view-only folder | Google Drive | View-only folder. $0. No watermark. |
| PPM, track record, DDQ, and more than one LP, with fenced Q&A | Dedicated room | NDA at the door, one audience per LP, current-version-only files. Cashpian is one example. |
| Already administered by AngelList or Carta | AngelList / Carta | The fundraising room is included. AngelList's is free. |
| Free fundraising room with NDA page, watermark, analytics, SOC 2 | AngelList | Free. Up to 10 rooms, 50 GB each, per the product page. Open to funds AngelList does not administer. |
| Click-through NDA, 2FA, subscribe from the room, rooms without admin | Juniper Square | 19,000+ rooms. Can buy Data Rooms without fund admin. SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001. |
| Subscriptions, KYC/AML | Carta / Juniper Square / AngelList | The portal job at first close. The room does not take subscriptions. |
| Capital calls, distributions, K-1s, LP reporting, wire instructions | Carta / Juniper Square / AngelList | The administrator's portal. Cashpian does none of this. |
| Investor CRM or LP pipeline | Juniper Square / DealCloud / Affinity / a spreadsheet | A data room is not a CRM. |
See What is Cashpian? for the company. This page is the raise-versus-portal split, not a best-of.
If the administrator already gave you a room
AngelList’s 28 May 2025 post made Data Room free for every fund. The product page lists up to 10 rooms at 50 GB each, an NDA page, watermarks, page-by-page metrics, and SOC 2. If AngelList already administers the fund, use that room. Carta ships a VC Fundraising Data Room next to Closings. Juniper Square sells Data Rooms with or without fund admin.
A dedicated room that is not your administrator’s still earns the line when you need one audience per LP, Q&A fenced from every other LP, and in-place versions so a stale PPM cannot stay in circulation. Cashpian is one example of that room. It is not a substitute for Carta, Juniper Square, or AngelList after first close.

If the files are already in a folder, grade which row they are on. Cashpian is a gated room for that packet. It is not a listing portal. It does not sell the company or run the deal.
